How to fix a sliding drawer
At a real client's home in Grand Cayman, we repaired a sliding drawer that sat under a bed. The side of the drawer had come away from the base, so it no longer ran on its slides. We took the drawer out, checked how badly the fixing holes had stripped, then used a power drill to re-attach the side to the base of the sliding drawer with metal brackets. These are the real job photos and the steps we took.
1. Pull the drawer out and see how far the damage goes
The drawer sat under a bed platform and had come off its slide, so we pulled it out and looked at the cavity it had been sitting in. The side panel was missing from the drawer box entirely, and the exposed board edges showed where the fixings had torn out. Checking the whole drawer before starting tells you whether the panel simply needs re-attaching, whether the slide itself is damaged, or whether the box has swollen and no longer sits square.

The drawer as we found it: the side panel had come away and the box was no longer running on its slide. 2. Take the detached side off and check the fixing holes
We took the side panel off and leant it against a wall to look at it properly. The screw holes where it had fixed to the base were stripped, with tear-out around the edges of them. That is the usual failure on this kind of furniture: the screws pull out of the board rather than the panel breaking. A panel in this condition cannot simply be screwed back into the same holes - the screws would have nothing to bite into and the drawer would come apart again the first time it was loaded.

The detached side panel. The stripped holes and tear-out are why the same screws could not simply go back in. 3. Re-attach the side to the drawer base with brackets and a power drill
With the original holes unusable, we fixed the side back to the base of the sliding drawer using metal L-brackets at the inside corner, driven in with a power drill. Brackets spread the load across solid material instead of the torn-out holes, and holding the panel in place while the first screw went in kept the drawer box square. We kept the screws short enough to bite into the panel without punching through the visible face.

The finished fixing: two metal brackets screwed into the inside corner hold the side to the drawer base. 4. Slide it back under the bed and check it runs
Once the brackets were tightened we put the drawer back under the bed and ran it in and out on its slides, checking it sat level and did not bind. Before we left we made sure the drawer opened and closed cleanly with weight in it, so the repair was proven rather than just fitted.

The drawer back under the bed with its side re-attached, running on its slides again.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a drawer slider & handle repair cost?
Our standard rate is $125 KYD per hour. Larger jobs are quoted per project. The total depends on what has actually failed - a side panel that has come off the base, a drawer slide that is bent or missing, or a handle that has pulled off its fixings - and how many drawers need doing. Send us a photo of the drawer and the damaged part for a quote specific to your setup.
How long does a drawer slider & handle repair take?
A single drawer with a panel that has come away or a handle that has pulled off is normally finished in one visit. It takes longer when a replacement slide has to be matched and sourced, when several drawers in the same unit are failing, or when the drawer box itself is swollen or warped and no longer sits square. We can advise on timing after seeing your setup; we do not promise a fixed turnaround before inspection.
What materials do you use for the repair?
Most drawer boxes are particleboard or MDF, so where the fixing holes have stripped we re-attach the panel with metal L-brackets and screws of a length and gauge that bite into solid material without punching through the visible face. Where the slide itself is broken we fit a replacement slide matched to the drawer. Handles that have pulled off are refitted with the correct wall plugs or backing plate so the screw has something to hold. We bring the brackets, screws and plugs we need; you only need to give us access to the drawer.
What does a drawer slider & handle repair involve?
We pull the drawer out and look at the whole box, because a drawer that has come off its slide usually failed somewhere else first. Then we check the detached panel and the fixing holes to see whether the screws have pulled out of the board or the board itself has torn. After that we re-attach the panel to the base of the sliding drawer with brackets driven in by power drill, or fit a new slide where the old one is bent, and refit any handle that came away with it. Before we leave we run the drawer in and out under load so it sits level and does not bind.
Can I fix a sliding drawer myself?
If the drawer simply came off its slide and nothing is broken, pushing it back onto the tracks and tightening the slide screws often solves it. Where the screw holes have stripped out of the particleboard, screwing the same screws back into the same holes will not hold - the panel needs brackets fixed into solid material, or the drawer will come apart again the first time it is loaded. The other mistake is screw length: too long and the screw punches through the visible face of the drawer, too short and it holds nothing. If a slide is bent, no amount of tightening will make the drawer run and the slide needs replacing.
