How to fix a broken towel bar

At a real client's home in Grand Cayman, a towel bar had come loose over time and was sitting slanted at an angle that prevented the client from hanging towels on it. Someone had previously tried to fix it, but the repair had failed. We removed the bar, re-drilled the correct screws into the wall, reattached the towel bar, and made sure it was tightly screwed into the wall at the correct angle. These are the real job photos and the steps we took.

  1. 1. Assess the slanted towel bar

The bar was hanging at a clear angle, loose at the wall, and towels would not stay on it. A previous repair attempt had not held, so tightening the visible screws was not going to be enough - the fixing points themselves had to be redone.

  2. 2. Remove the towel bar from the wall

We loosened the grub screws and took the bar off its mounting bracket. With the bar out of the way we could see why it had failed: the bracket's screws were no longer biting into the wall properly, so the whole fitting moved under load.

  3. 3. Re-drill the correct fixing points

Rather than reusing the stripped holes, we positioned the bracket at the correct angle and drilled fresh fixing points into the wall, driving the correct screws in with a drill so the bracket sat tight and level.

  4. 4. Check the bracket is solid

With the new fixings in, we checked the bracket by hand - pulling and twisting it to confirm there was no movement at the wall. A bracket that shifts even slightly will work loose again within weeks, so this check matters before the bar goes back on.

  5. 5. Reattach the bar level and tight

We slid the towel bar back onto the bracket, tightened the grub screws, and confirmed it sat level and firmly screwed into the wall at the correct angle. Tested under load, it held with no movement - ready for towels again.

Frequently asked questions

How much does towel bar or toilet paper holder repair cost?

Our standard rate is $125 KYD per hour. Larger jobs are quoted per project. The total depends on what has failed - a loose bracket, stripped screw holes in the wall, or a fitting that needs replacing entirely - and whether the wall needs patching before the fitting can go back on. Send us a photo of the towel bar or holder and the wall around it for a quote specific to your setup.

How long does the repair take?

A loose towel bar or toilet paper holder is normally fixed in one visit. It takes longer when the screw holes have been stripped or enlarged by a previous failed repair, because the wall may need new anchors or a patched and drilled fixing point rather than a simple re-screw. We can advise on timing after seeing your setup; we do not promise a fixed turnaround before inspection.

What materials do you use for the work?

We refit the existing bar or holder wherever possible, using the correct screws and wall anchors for the wall type - drywall, plaster or tile. Where the original fixings have failed or the holes are stripped, we use new anchors sized to hold the load of wet towels, not just the weight of the bar. We bring the fixings and tools we need; you only need to clear the area around the fitting.

What does the repair involve?

We start by removing the bar or holder and inspecting why it came loose - on this job the bracket had worked free over time and a previous repair attempt had failed, leaving the bar slanted at an angle that towels would not stay on. We then re-drill the correct fixing points, secure the mounting bracket tightly to the wall, and reattach the bar at the correct angle. Finally we test it under load to make sure it holds before we leave.

Can I fix a loose towel bar myself?

Tightening the small grub screw under the bracket is a reasonable DIY first step if the bar has just started to wobble. The usual DIY mistake is re-screwing into the same stripped hole, which holds for a few weeks and then fails again - often pulling a chunk of wall out with it. If the bracket moves at the wall, the holes are enlarged, or a previous attempt has already failed, it is worth having someone refit it properly with fresh anchors.
